Central Highlands Visitors Centre

Bothwell’s new Visitor Centre is injecting new life into a set of historic buildings, and contributing to the rejuvenation of one of Tasmania’s most scenic historic towns.

The Visitor Centre is placed between two historic structures – a former school and the teacher’s residence, both entered on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.

In designing the building, Loop Architecture undertook extensive documentation of the existing buildings and discovered that the former school building concealed scissor truss roof framing above more recent pine ceiling. This simple structural design was adapted for the new building, combining a modern composite insulated roof panel system with traditional bolted timber scissor trusses. The new addition employs gable roof forms, expressed timber framing, and cladding to emulate the widespread craft aesthetic of the area and compliment the detailed stonework of the buildings it flanks.

The result is a purpose built Visitor Centre for Bothwell that respects its past, ensures the ongoing use of two much-loved heritage buildings, and enhances facilities for the community and visitors to Bothwell.

Queen Street Office

This upper level in one of Eliazbeth Streets heritage buildings has set a precedent for those below.  Engaged by the landlord, Loop Architecture delivered a base shell tenancy with new amenities for a prospective tenant.  The fitout and shell references the clients brief of New York loft while responding to the existing structural beauty of the building.

Herne Lodge

The building sits in a native bush clearing 900m above seal level on a sheep farm in the central highlands of Tasmania. Its primary purpose is a residence for the property owners. A series of gable roof forms have been used to emulate a cluster of farm sheds. Simple gang nail Tas Oak trusses and framing make up the structure.

A strong visual connection is created from the entry through the centre of the main building by a cathedral ceiling and central double-sided fireplace. LVL rafters were used to create the seamless cathedral ceiling and also provided enough roof space for insulation and services. Highland Oak veneer is used extensively throughout the joinery in the project and provides a welcome softness against the local stone wall that runs along the southern elevation of the main building.

The covered outdoor area to the east is an extension of the internal living space. Exposed Tas Oak scissor trusses and verandah framing make reference to 19th century building techniques used in the district.
